Colorado Trail Hike 01-05-10 pt1

 Colorado Trail Winter Camp 1-05-10

First day on the 01-05-10 Colorado trail trip was the typical long walk from the parking lot. This is looking out from the parking lot.

This trip started with 3 power bars and about 12 oz's trail mix and a quart of water. This is a lesson in doing without in some of the harsher environments. As you walk along the South Platte river you'll see a variety of wildlife such as deer and sheep along the canyon and many types of birds such as the beautiful wood duck. Here is a small frozen feed to the SP.

After about 2 hours you will come to the dam which is 6 miles from the parking lot. This is where I like to take the first little break. Stretch here because its about to get strenuous.

From here it is a pretty good climb so take your time. Continue to follow road and you will pass some houses and utility bulidings.

After turning off the waterton canyon rd on to the trail you have a short climb to this lovely sign. This is where it all starts or ends for many hikers. For our crew this is where the stories start. June 28th is the time we have planned but I will see this area more before then.

One hour in you come to teds rest as I believe its called. This is where I setup first nights camp. I used the hammock with tarp. Night temps didn't dip that low this night so it was pretty comfortable overall. There is a Fire pit but must hike for wood.
